Three steps, no opinion in any of them

  • You give an address and a date

    The address is resolved to a coordinate and the date to a German local day, because a gust at 00:30 carries the previous day in UTC and getting that wrong changes the answer.

  • The archives are read

    Every station within reach that actually recorded gusts, rain or present weather on that day is read straight from the national weather service's public archive — not from a copy, not from a model.

  • You get the record

    A dated PDF with every figure, the station that produced it, the distance, the quality level and the address of the archive file it came from. Anyone can open the same file and check it.

  • Gusts at the nearest stations

    Peak gust in km/h and m/s, the Beaufort force, the minute it blew, the distance and direction from your address, and the quality level the service published with the value.

  • The threshold, stated plainly

    Whether the measurement reached 62 km/h — wind force 8 — quoted as what the standard conditions say, never as a statement about your policy.

  • Rain and hail

    Day totals and peak intensity from the nearest rain gauges, and any hail actually observed at a station near the address, with the observation code.

  • Ten years of context

    Where the day ranks among every daily gust that station has recorded in the ten years before it, and how often it has been that windy.

  • A provenance appendix

    Every dataset, publisher, licence and archive file address, printed in full, so the numbers can be checked without asking us.

  • A verification page

    The record has a public address and a hash over its measured content. Your insurer can open it and see the same figures.

  • Not an expert opinion

    Nobody has inspected your roof, read your policy or assessed your claim. This is a data extract with its sources attached.

  • No lightning

    There is no lightning feed in Europe that can be licensed for this at a sane price, and the community networks forbid exactly this use. So we do not report lightning at all rather than estimate it.

  • Hail is thinly observed

    Hail is seen at points, not measured across an area, and the observing network is far coarser than a hail swath. When no station saw it, the record says so — that is not evidence that none fell.

  • Distance is printed, always

    Across Germany the nearest station that actually records gusts is a median 11.6 km from a home. Past 25 km we will not sell you a record about your address.
